BETHEL — The Joel Barlow High School girls lacrosse team responded in a big way Tuesday night after suffering its first loss of the season on Friday.

The Falcons, who had dropped a one-goal heart-breaker at Branford three days earlier, bounced back with a 20-6 victory over Bethel in a South-West Conference game.

“We had a tough loss on Saturday, and it feels nice to come back and win,” said Barlow freshman Bella Miceli, who led the Falcons’ potent attack with five goals and two assists.

Junior co-captain Julia Shapiro added four goals and two assists for Barlow (7-1, 6-0 SWC), while senior co-captain Sarah Witherbee scored four goals and senior co-captain Cat Goncalves chipped in with two goals and an assist. Freshman goalie Brooke Squitieri made two saves.

“The girls looked good tonight,” Barlow coach Steve Coppock said. “We pride ourselves on defense, but it’s nice to score some goals, too, and a lot of girls got into the action.”

Christiana Ruiz and Samantha Barnum scored two goals apiece to lead Bethel (3-6, 2-5 SWC), while goalie Anne Habeck made six saves.

“I’m very proud of the fact that, even as my girls were down 10, 11, 12 goals, they were still playing hard, they were still hustling all over the field,” Bethel coach Shelly Rinas said. “Even though we got down early and stayed down, they never really gave up. They play hard for 50 minutes, and that’s all you can really ask for as a coach.”

TURNING POINT

Vicky Gracy scored 2:01 in to put Bethel on the board first. Off the ensuing faceoff, however, Barlow’s Molly Carroll scooped a loose ball, raced in on goal land tucked it home to tie the score. That sparked a 9-0 that put the Falcons comfortably ahead midway through the first half.

PLAYOFF HUNT

Barlow (7-1, 6-0 SWC) remained undefeated in SWC action and remained tied with Pomperaug (7-1, 6-0 SWC) atop the Colonial Division standings. The fast start has given the Falcons a big boost of confidence.

“We’re really excited,” Miceli said. “Everyone is really positive on the team.”

As luck would have it, Barlow and Pomperaug are scheduled to meet in the regular-season finale in Southbury on May 15.
