Marriage of minor stopped

The marriage of a 15-year-old girl that was scheduled to take place this month was stopped by officials here on Tuesday.

Based on a tip off, a team led by District Child Protection Officer M. Selvan and officials visited the girl’s home at a village in Veerapandi Union.

The girl was produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The affects of child marriage was explained to her parents and a written statement was obtained from them that they would not perform marriage for her until she completes 18 years.

Later, the girl was allowed to go with the parents. The girl had written her SSLC examinations and was asked to continue her studies. Officials said that the girl will be under continuous monitoring until she completes 18 years.
