One of the oldest and largest law firms in the state will open a second office in the Corridor later this summer.
Shuttleworth and Ingersoll, founded in Cedar Rapids in 1854, will open a second location at 327 Second St. in Coralville by Aug. 1.
The multi-specialty law firm will offer all the same legal services available at its Cedar Rapids office.
Brian Bergstrom, president of Shuttleworth, said the decision to open a second location was prompted by a growing client base in Iowa City, Coralville and the surrounding area.
“This move is about serving our clients where it is convenient for them as our firm continues to grow,” Bergstrom said in a statement. “... This gives our clients the opportunity to have access to specialized teams of attorneys located in Cedar Rapids and Coralville-Iowa City depending on the client’s specific needs.”
The firm has about 50 lawyers with clients that include individuals, closely held businesses, public companies, insurance companies, banks and not-for-profits.
Shuttleworth was founded 134 years ago by Nathaniel Hubbard, making it one of the oldest continuously operating law firms west of the Mississippi River. After serving in the Civil War, Hubbard and his partner, Frank Dawley. helped pioneer the legal system, political divisions and commercial infrastructure in Iowa.
The law firm became known as Elliot, Shuttleworth and Ingersoll in 1945. After World War II, the firm was for a time the largest in Iowa.
Craven Shuttleworth and others routinely appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court and various Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal.
In 1963, the firm adopted the name Shuttleworth and Ingersoll.
