Able leader

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Second coming”(April 24). It is in the interest of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) that both its former General Secretary Prakash Karat and his present successor Sitaram Yechury

have eventually buried differences over a couple of issues, including a pre-poll alliance with the grand old party ahead of the next year’s parliamentary election.

Actually, the ratification of Yechury’s second consecutive term by the Congress on Sunday reflects well on the party’s strategy that in these crucial times of political tie-ups, going solo in the fray, and that too against a formidable rival like the BJP will prove dicey for every single party.  Yechury is a seasoned and an able statesman who justifiably thinks that any Bihar-like successful mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) excluding the Congress  will fall on stony ground.
