Farmer dies in massive protest in Mahoba district

Death of a farmer due to police excesses led to a massive protest in Mahoba district on Tuesday morning. Senior officers including, District Magistrate and SP had to rush to the spot to pacify agitated farmers. It was only after a sub-inspector and a constable were arrested a case registered against them that agitators allowed the autopsy of the victim identified as Chandrakali. SP in Mahoba, N Kolanchi said on Tuesday that action was taken against the cops after meeting Bundelkhand Farmer Union president Vimal Sharma and other leaders. District Magistrate Sahdev also ordered a probe into the matter and announced Rs 30,000 as financial help for the bereaved family. Besides, the DM also wrote to the state government requesting other support and benefits of government schemes for the family. As per reports, sub-inspector Sumit Tewari and constable Vansh Gopal Sharma of Ajanar police station intercepted a sand-laden tractor trolley on Monday night. While the truck was being towed  to the police station amidst protest by locals, farmer leader Chandrakali came  under its wheels and was crushed to death. Agitated over the leader’s death, the farmers started protesting against the police and administration and blocked roads early Tuesday morning. Some agitator also vandalised the Community Health Centre and scuffled with cops trying to defuse the situation. A unit of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) was deployed in the area to control the situation. Former MP, Ganga Charan Rajput reached the residence of the deceased and expressed his condolences. He also announced to bear the expense for the marriage of thge deceased’ daughter.  Meanwhile, to keep its record straight, the police charged the deceased of indulging in illegal mining and said that the tractor and trolley was intercepted as the accused was carrying illegally mined sand through the area.
