A Southwest Florida boater enjoying a day on the water with friends either ran into a cranky captain or a boater channeling Blackbeard the pirate.

The boater told the Lee County Sheriff's Office he fell victim to an aggravated assault that happened near Captiva Pass around 5 p.m. on Friday, April 20, as he and three friends were returning to shore.

The boater said his craft approached another boat, an aluminum craft with twin engines and two white power poles on the back that was anchored a mile from Captiva Pass. The complainant approached from the other boat's bow direction.

The other captain came to the front of his boat and fired a shotgun in the direction of the approaching craft. He then reloaded and pointed the gun at the approaching craft, which the complaining captain said was approximately 50 to 75 feet away.

When asked what he was doing the captain said the approaching boat came at him from the wrong side.

The complainant, who told the sheriff's office he was in fear for his life, said he would like to prosecute. The sheriff's office is investigating.
