A Cape Coral police officer may have saved a man's life after the man was thrown from his SUV in a single-car crash Sunday.

William T. Sutton, 24, was driving his 2005 Ford Expedition south on Del Prado Boulevard North about 2 a.m. when he approached a curve at a high rate of speed, investigators with the Major Crash Unit said.

Sutton struck the curb of the inside median, causing the SUV to rotate clockwise. The SUV crossed the southbound lanes and left the roadway, striking a tree. The SUV continued rotating, digging into the grass and becoming airborne, police said.

The vehicle then struck a second tree on the driver's side, ejecting Sutton.

The first responding officer applied a tourniquet to Sutton's leg, potentially saving his life, officers said. Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital.
