Joanne Burdell Beckley, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Tipton on Saturday, April 28, at 11 a.m., with visitation on Friday, April 27, at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence, from 5 to 7 p.m. After services, cremation rites will be accorded.
Joanne was born on March 19, 1933, to Walter and Leona Boedeker Helmold at Clarence, Iowa. She married Henry Plate in 1953 at Chanute AFB in Illinois. He passed away in 1969. She then married Wm. Wendell Beckley in 1971 at Lowden, Iowa.
Survivors include her husband Wm. Wendell of Tipton; son, Daniel (Heather) Plate of Tipton; stepdaughter, Debbie Jean (Charles) Lane of Waterloo; daughter-in-law, Priscilla Plate of Goose Creek, S.C.; sister, Shirley McMillan of Kansas City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Henry Plate; son, William; and grandchildren.
Joanne was a certified geriatric nurse and taught continuing education to nurses in many states. She did extensive traveling with her husband Wm. Wendell and also passed the written exam for flying. Joanne enjoyed gardening, flowers, knitting, needlepoint, quilting, crocheting and baking.
Memorials may be directed to the Tipton Senior Center, Trinity Lutheran Church or Cedar Manor Nursing Home.
