MILTON — A town man was charged this month after a unlicensed trap he allegedly set behind his home caught his neighbor's dog, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said Wednesday.
The dog's owner called 911 on the evening of April 13 to report the pit bull was caught in a foothold trap behind a neighbor's home.
Saratoga County s deputies released the dog, who was unharmed, and called in state Environmental Conservation Officer Steve Shaw for further investigation. Police found a decomposed deer carcass next to the trap, likely left there as bait, the DEC said.
The next day, Shaw interviewed the man who owned the neighboring property. The man, who was not named by the DEC, "admitted to setting the trap," "could not explain where the deer carcass originated," and told the officer that he "used to" have a trapping license but no longer did, the agency said.
The Milton man was charged with unlawful possession of wildlife, trapping without a license and trapping out of season. He will appear in Milton Town Court.
