An alligator that took a casual Sunday stroll near Deltona Middle School was killed on Wednesday morning after it was spotted near a pond, officials said.
"We were notified it was captured," said Volusia County school spokeswoman Nancy Wait on Wednesday, adding she didn't know if the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission did away with it.
Dispatchers on Wednesday morning relayed information to deputies that the alligator had been spotted near Enterprise Road and DeBary Avenue in Deltona. Volusia deputies were out there assisting FWC, authorities said.
Shortly after 11 a.m., dispatchers said that the alligator had been "annihilated" by FWC.
Officials said the alligator was spotted walking near the Deltona Middle School on Sunday around 7:30 p.m. but was gone by the time a state trapper arrived on scene.
FWC spokesman Greg Workman said that The Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP) notified the school that a gator was reported in the area.
