Panel asks police to probe attack on pregnant woman

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has asked the District Police Chief, Kozhikode, to assign an official not below the rank of a Deputy Superintendent of Police to inquire into how Jyotsna Sibi, a resident of Kodencherry, lost her four-month-old foetus after she was reportedly manhandled by a gang which had local political support. The order was issued based on a complaint by Jyotsna. In the complaint, she alleged that action was not taken against those who attacked her seven-year-old daughter though she had filed a case under the POCSO Act. Ms. Jyotsna alleged that she and her husband were brutally attacked by seven people. Her daughter was thrown off to the floor. She alleged that the police refused to register a case. Jyotsna claimed that she had to vacate her house and move to a rented accommodation in Thamarassery after she was threatened by the accused. She had to relocate from the rented premises too because of the activities of the local workers of a major political party.

The commission pointed out that the police were not acting against the accused because of political influence.
