The Canterbury School added to its impressive list of recent college baseball signees at a ceremony Wednesday, and that was with its highest-profile prospect not attending because he was busy running sprints and relays at a track meet.

The Cougars’ six signees in five sports Wednesday included two in baseball: Levi Shuck with FGCU and Nick Vanderhoef with Barry.

Also signing were volleyball’s Hana Keith (Emory), soccer’s Max Waldau (Brown), lacrosse’s Mason Burge (Catawba) and rugby’s Devan Devost (Arkansas State).

Giovanni DiGiacomo, who was running track Wednesday but signed earlier with LSU for baseball, and Danny Cunningham, who is undecided on a school, will give Canterbury’s two-time reigning state champion program 14 college signees in the last three years.

Basketball's Berrick Jeanlouis, who has offers from FGCU and FAU after being released from his signing with South Alabama because of a coaching change, continues courting other interest and may not sign for several weeks, said Cougars coach Darrin Wallace.

“It’s amazing,” said Shuck, a pitcher and infielder who will join his brother, Tyler, at FGCU. “I’ve played baseball with many of these kids my whole life. It’s awesome to see where they’re going.”

Clemson, Florida State and Bethune Cookman are among the schools also signing Canterbury baseball players since 2016 alone.

Sam Keating signed with Clemson last year but received a $900,000 signing bonus after being drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 4th round last summer. He pitched in rookie ball last year in Arizona.

But others are having collegiate success.

Those include Cooper Swanson hitting .283 as a freshman part-time starting infielder at Florida State, Michael Matter posting a 2.62 ERA as a sophomore reliever for Belmont and Giovany Lorenzo starting 26 games as a freshman at Bethune-Cookman.

After originally signing with Memphis in 2016, Carter Smith has hit .310 in two seasons at Florida SouthWestern in Fort Myers and just committed to join Swanson at FSU.

And Canterbury’s junior class already has another D-I prospect in closer Bryce Einstein, who has a .054 ERA this season and has committed to Lipscomb in Nashville.

“We’ve had so much talent previous years. They’ve progressed to the next level really well,” said Shuck, hoping more Canterbury alums will become professional prospects.

“If we keep working at it we’ll have some pro talent. I’d be so happy to move on at that level.”

In the meantime, the Cougars know they have targets on their backs chasing a third straight state title. Canterbury is 19-4 in the final week of the regular season.

“It’s going to be tough, but we’ll get there,” Shuck said. “Every team’s out there to be Canterbury. We’re ready for them. We’re ready for every team.”
