Republican Lesko narrowly wins Arizona special election

Republican Debbie Lesko won a special election for Arizona's 8th Congressional District on Tuesday night, the Associated Press reported, in a race that was more tightly contested that usual for a solidly Republican district. Early returns showed Lesko with a 53%-47% lead over Democrat Hiral Tipirneni. The district, in Phonenix's western suburbs, is one of the most conservative in Arizona and President Donald Trump won there by 21 percentage points in 2016. The race was seen as a national bellwether of the level of opposition to President Donald Trump. The special election was held after Rep. Trent Franks resigned in December amid sexual misconduct allegations. Another race for the next full term will be held in November.
