1902 jail to turn into museum

The old jail situated in the heart of Pauri town which came up in 1902 during the British regime is all set to be converted into a museum to be named after the legendary Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali. Decks would be cleared for the transformation of the jail once the registry of the land and its transfer to the State cultural affairs  department is completed.

It is learnt that the State cultural  affairs department has released an amount of  Rs  8,02,000 to the district cultural affairs department for the purpose. Besides, the price of the land Rs 7,14,525 has been paid to the jail department. Officers said that things started rolling after the Union cultural affairs minister had sanctioned Rs 30 crore to the tate  in response to an appeal of the chief minister Trivendra  Singh Rawat. While  Rs 20 crore would be spent in the establishment of a museum in Tehri the remaining  part would be used in the conversion of the British era  Pauri jail into the museum to be named after  the legendary Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali.

The persistent efforts of the Pauri district magistrate  have yielded result as the state  jail administration transferred the  ownership of the land on which the old jail  stands to the district cultural affairs department. While the old jail premises is spread over  .094 hectare .069 hectare had been transferred to department free. 

As per the letter of the inspector general Uttarakhand jail dated March 13,  the department concerned was required to deposit an amount for transferring the remaining part of the land measured around  .025 hectare  in the bank account of the superintendent of jail, Pauri. Responding to the letter, the  district magistrate Sushil Kumar had written  to the  director Uttarakhand cultural affairs department that Rs 8,02,000 was to be handed over to the Uttarakhand jail administration  as the cost of the land lying vacant in the  jail premises. Out of the amount, Rs 7,14, 525 was to be transferred into the account of the jail administration and the rest would be required to meet the expenses for registration.
