A day after Chief Minister lashed out at the State Human Rights Commission for seeking a CBI probe into the alleged custodial death of a 26-year-old man, its Acting Chairman P Mohana Das today said he had not overstepped the mandate of the panel.
"I can assert that I have not exceeded the limit of the law and made any statement not only on this issue but on any matter," Das said.
He said the Chief Minister might have criticised the Commission due to "ignorance of law."
Vijayan, during a press meet yesterday, had slammed Das for seeking a CBI probe into the alleged custodial death of 26-year-old S R Sreejith at Varapuzha in Kochi.
Rejecting the demand for a CBI probe, Vijayan had asked the Human Rights Commission Chairman do his duty only.
Many of Das' statements were "unbecoming of the position he holds," Vijayan had said.
It seemed the statements were part of his political stand, the chief minister added.
Das was appointed as acting chairperson of KSHRC during the previous Congress-led UDF rule.
Sreejith, who was taken into custody in connection with the death of a person early this month, had died in a private hospital.
His relatives alleged that he died due to torture.
Police have rejected the allegation saying Sreejith was suspected to have suffered injuries during a clash before he was taken into custody.
