State police said they've arrested a man who tried, and failed, to rob a liquor store south of Wilmington just before 1 a.m. Tuesday.

A trooper on patrol passed Boxwood Liquors, 630 S. Maryland Ave., and observed a "suspicious subject standing in front of the business," police said. Police said the man, later identified as 30-year-old Wilmington resident Barry Cline, ran when he saw the cop.

Police arrested him and found the business window was smashed by a cinder block lying on the sidewalk nearby, police said. Cline was linked to the burglary attempt, police said, and charged with third-degree attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief.

He was released on $6,100 unsecured bail.
