70 YEARS AGO
1948
A.R.Self of Augusta won the Kansas State Chess Association Championship at Emporia.
The officers elected for Augusta High School’s Student Council for the next year: Harvey Harrison, president; Dolan Brandt vice president; Donna Mabry, secretary; Bill Smith, treasurer.
The AHS lettermen for 1947-1948 were named: Clyde Ewart, Cliff Boucher, Jim Lininger, David Jackson, J.E. Chappell, Harley Singer, and Dolan Brandt.
60 YEARS AGO
1958
The Augusta City Lake had just been re-stocked and no fishing would be allowed for a year.  At the park, 20 m.p.h. signs were posted.
High point man at the quadrangular track meet in Wichita was Kent Adams of Augusta.
Jerry Emming received the highest award in Boy Scouts, the Eagle Award.
50 YEARS AGO
1968
The girls chosen to attend Sunflower Girls State were Mary Kay Carter and Deborah Scott.
AHS golfers took first place at the Pratt Invitational with 12 other schools.  Team members were Mike Stevens, Scott Brooks, Danny Skidmore, Mike Matthews, Mike Kaufman, Carl Jacobs, and John Crowe.
The AHS Thespians were planning to present “The Sound of Music,” directed by Kurt Conrad.
40 YEARS AGO
1978
Joy Leatherman was named the 1978 Master Teacher.
Mark Cleveland was named the assistant vice principal and athletic director at the junior high school.
City Councilman Everett Johnson suggested to the governing body to eliminate the $100 a year paid to individual council members and increase the amount paid to the mayor.
30 YEARS AGO
1988
Augusta remained undefeated in CTL baseball action and broke in the new Rodney Wheeler Stadium with two wins against Circle.
Representative Bob Whittaker of Augusta filed for Republican nomination to his 6th term representing the Kansas Fifth District.
Five students competed  at the state level of GFWC: Amy Emrich, Stacy Usher, Rachelle McCollom, Kari Madison, and Jamie Evans.
20 YEARS AGO
1998
The Robert J. Shryock Park was dedicated.  The park was named for the late Shryock, who served 17 years as city councilman and mayor.
Gary Emry was the new executive director of the Augusta Chamber of Commerce.
Paul Oliver was saluted as a Friend of Augusta and Donna Nickel received the Good Apple Award at a USD 402 reception.

2008
The Augusta Board of Education was discussing school safety and security.
American Legion Post 189 honored Ed Freeman for 50 years of continuous membership.
Ezri Berggren’s story “The Clown of the Orchestra” took first place in the third grade group and her illustrations featured on the cover of the Young Writers and Illustrators 2008 book, as part of KPTS’s Reading Rainbow.
