The program said freshman next to Buhler pitcher Taidan Hawkinson’s name so his seven-inning shutout in the second game of the double-header against Wellington, appears all that more remarkable.
Hawkinson allowed just two hits in striking out five Wellington batters over the course of the 6-0 Buhler win.
In the opener the result was a bit more uplifting as Wellington came to work ready to play by scoring four runs in the first inning and making them hold up for a 4-2 victory.
Aaron Schoemann, who has been a mainstay in the bullpen for Wellington this season, was awarded the ball to start for the first time this spring. He did not disappoint as Schoemann went four and a third innings before giving way to Arlis Troutman who earned the save. Schoemann was charged with Buhler’s two runs.
“Aaron was on tonight,” head coach Jeff Frazee said of Schoemann’s performance. “When he throws strikes he’s tough to get to.”
In the Wellington first, Matthew Rinehart and Grey Hatfield singled before advancing on a wild pitch with Rinehart scoring the Crusaders’ first run. A walk issued and after another run scored, a HBP set the base runners for DeAndre Washington who singled and drove in two for all the runs Wellington would need for the win in the opener.
Both Rinehart and Hatfield went 2 for 4 for the Crusaders in the win. But the hits would be hard to come by for Wellington in the nightcap.
“Our bats just went cold,” lamented coach Frazee after the 6-0 second-game loss.
Doubles by Troutman and Cade Phelps were the only hits mustered for Wellington in the loss. Washington took the loss on the mound, pitching into the fifth before Troutman once again relieved.
Wellington was charged with four errors in the loss, continuing a season long problem in the field.
“Our kids will regroup,” said Frazee. “We’ll be ready for Clearwater Thursday night.”
The Crusaders do indeed travel to Clearwater for a double-header this week. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
