It was a 166-point rise for the Sensex to settle at 34,617.The Nifty climbed 30 points to 10,614.

In the Sensex group, 18 stocks rose.

Reliance Industries was up 3.70 per cent and led the pack of Sensex gainers, buoyed by reports that Reliance Jio added highest monthly users in a year.

Aluminium stocks Nalco and Hindalco plunged more than 7 per cent, in line with a fall in global aluminium prices.

The US extended the deadline for firms to wind up business with the sanctions-hit Russian producer Rusal.

ICICI Prudential Life witnessed the biggest spike in open interest at 52.38 per cent. Piramal Enterprises (43.73 per cent) and Motherson Sumi (43 per cent) came in next.
