Adhere to road safety rules: MP

All individuals should take accident insurance policy to avoid his or her family members the prospect of being financially broken in the event of the person getting involved in an accident, MP K. Haribabu has said.

He participated as chief guest at the inaugural of the 29th Road Safety Week meeting at the VUDA Children Arena here on Monday

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Haribabu underlined the need for adhering to road safety rules to bring down the incidence of accidents. He called for compulsory wearing of helmets and fastening of seats belts. He complimented the district officials for their efforts in reducing the road accident rate in the district.

Mr. Haribabu said the officials should insist on a second driver, if the driving hours were long. He attributed accidents to driver fatigue and lack of rest for drivers. MLA P. Vishnu Kumar Raju recommended severe action against those who indulge in cell phone driving and drunken driving.

Awareness

Deputy Transport Commissioner S. Venkateswara Rao said the road safety week would be observed till April 30. Awareness programmes for lorry and auto drivers would be held in coordination with the respective driver associations. The number of road accidents in the district had declined by 21 per cent in 2017 compared to the previous year.
