New malware targets healthcare sector

MUMBAI: Cybersecurity firm Symantec has identified a new cybercriminal group that is conducting targeted attacks against the healthcare, IT and manufacturing sectors in US, Europe and Asia. The largest number of victims was in US (17%), followed by India (7%), Saudi Arabia (7%), Philippines (5%), and Hungary (5%).

The attack group known as Orangeworm has been observed deploying a custom backdoor within large international organizations that include healthcare providers, pharmaceuticals, IT solution providers for healthcare and equipment manufacturers that serve the healthcare industry, according to Symantec’s research.

Most alarmingly, Symantec found malware on medical devices such as X-Ray and MRI machines as well as machines used to assist patients in completing consent forms for required procedures, according to information on the company’s blog.
