CHANDIGARH: A 30-year-old drunk man made a foiled attempt to rape a 5-year-old girl in a village falling under the
Ding police station of
Sirsa district.
The accused has been arrested and will be produced in the court on Wednesday, Inspector Balwant
Jassu, SHO of Ding police station said.
Crime occurred on Monday afternoon when the survivor girl was returning home from the school. Accused identified as Negha Ram kidnapped her from outside her grandfather's house and took her to a small room adjacent to cremation ground.
"The accused was about to sexually abuse the girl and removed his cloths when the people living in the nearby house spotted him. They noticed him from the top floor of the house after hearing girl’s cries. He managed to escape leaving the girl there," said Jassu, the investigating officer.
According to the information, it was during late evening hours when the girl’s parents approached the police. SHO Ding and other officers visited the spot and carried out preliminary investigations.
Soon after the registration of case, teams were sent to round up the accused who was found from the area outside the Ding village.
"Accused has confessed that he was drunk and had kidnapped the girl with an intention of abusing her. On Wednesday, he will be produced before the court,’’ said Jassu.
The incident came a day after the Union government cleared death penalty for the rape of minor girls below 12 years of age.
