Kiwi reggae-roots band Tomorrow People has "parted ways" with singer Marcus Abraham following a domestic violence accusation by his former partner.

Tomorrow People announced on Saturday that "one of our members", who the band did not name, would no longer be part of the band following allegations made on Facebook.

The Facebook post in question has since been taken down but was made by Abraham's former partner.

Tomorrow People lead singer Marcus Abraham, second from right, has been accused of domestic violence.

After being contacted by Stuff about the allegation against Abraham, police confirmed that a 27-year-old man had been charged with male assaults female in relation to an incident in Lower Hutt on Saturday. He was expected to appear in Hutt Valley District Court on April 30.

The band said in a statement: "By now a lot of you would've heard about an alleged incident that happened yesterday, involving one of our singers.

"It was a huge shock to us and we're still coming to terms with it all. Please note that this matter is being dealt with through the appropriate channels... We are fully committed to ensuring that both parties involved are given the appropriate support they need.

"As a result, the remaining members and management of TP have agreed that it's best to part ways with this person, so he can focus on these personal matters. We will continue to support those involved through this process and will assist in any investigation if required."

The band declined to comment on the incident further, with manager Tana Tupai sending a statement: "Tomorrow People does not in any way condone domestic violence. We are currently supporting and working with both parties on this serious matter."

Abraham's partner also declined to comment further.

Abraham was first credited on Tomorrow People's 2015 album Bass and Bassinets and also appeared on their latest release, BBQ Reggae, which debuted at number one on the New Zealand album charts when it was released earlier this year.

The band is due to embark on a nationwide tour in support of BBQ Reggae in May.
