The New Albany Police Department recently traced a source of narcotics coming into the city from Columbus.

Columbus Division of Police officers then found several narcotics, including what they believed to be marijuana and cocaine, after acting on a search warrant at 8:58 a.m. April 5 in the 600 block of South Fifth Street in Columbus.

New Albany police obtained the search warrant after investigating the source of narcotics coming into the city, said Sgt. Curtis Baker. To find drug dealers, police more than likely have to travel out of jurisdiction, said Sgt. Kris Daniels.

A Columbus police unit executed the warrant, Baker said, but the case will remain New Albany's to investigate, Daniels said.

After searching the residence, officers found 8.5 pounds of processed marijuana, 10 marijuana plants, more than 4 grams of suspected cocaine, about 2.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 3 doses of oxycodone and a handgun, Baker said.

The occupant of the rental property was not home during the search, and several felony charges are expected to be filed against him, Baker said. Charges are pending analysis of the drugs seized, he said.

The charges also could be increased because of the property's location, he said.

"The occupant will face enhanced charges since the residence was within 1,000 feet of a school," Baker said.

In other recent New Albany police incident reports:

* After a traffic stop at 3:18 p.m. April 14 at Beech and Smith's Mill roads, an officer found brass knuckles in the vehicle of a 43-year-old Johnstown man. Charges for the brass knuckles are pending, Daniels said. New Albany forwarded the case to the Licking County prosecutor, he said.

* A 19-year-old Croton woman was cited for drug paraphernalia, drug abuse and controlled-substance possession or use after a traffic stop at 6:27 a.m. April 14 at Johnstown and Southfield roads.

* A 32-year-old Newark man was arrested for a warrant and cited for drug abuse and controlled-substance possession after a traffic stop at 8:02 p.m. April 2 at state Route 161 and North Hamilton Road. The man was in possession of narcotics and the warrant was through Franklin County, said Sgt. Garrett Fernander.
