The Alma High School baseball team improved to 6-0 on the season and 4-0 in Tri-Valley Central Conference action Tuesday as it swept Shepherd at home.
The Panthers won the opener 3-0 as senior lefty Damon Anguiano tossed a complete-game shutout. He allowed no runs on three hits while striking out six and walking two.
He also helped the offense with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Brec Alward added in an RBI single and swiped a base while Brock Milan and Brandon Huff both had hits.
Andrew Gauthier took the tough-luck loss as he allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out one in six innings. Kyle Barton, Owen Moeggenberg and Seth Deming had hits for the Jays (3-8, 0-4).
Trailing 3-2 going into the top of the seventh in game two the Panthers scored three times to secure the sweep. With one out Sutherland singled and moved to second on an error. He scored when Anguiano reached to tie the game at 3-3. Alward then drove in Anguiano to make it 4-3 before scampering home to close the scoring out at 5-3.
Dyer Leonard (2-0) got the win, allowing one earned run on three hits while walking six and striking out five. Anguiano closed it out for his second save.
Anguiano had two hits, two runs scored and stole two bases. Alward also added in a hit, two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI.
Moeggenberg took the loss for the Jays in game two, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out five. Bobby Shukait had two hits and drove in two for Shepherd while Thomas Judge had a hit and a run. The loss was Shepherd’s third defeat in the last at-bat.
