Wilmington police have a woman in custody they've accused of shooting a 24-year-old man in the area of West 4th and Orange streets Monday night.

Patrol officers pulled over a woman for a traffic stop around 9 p.m., according to police. She told the officers her passenger, the 24-year-old man, had been shot.

The man's leg was wounded and he was treated on the scene before being transported in an ambulance to Christiana Hospital, police said. He's in stable condition.

Police said they learned 37-year-old Maya Lewis, a Lamotte Street resident, had been in a verbal fight, then a physical one with the victim.

She then pulled a gun and fired one round, hitting him in the leg, police said.

Police located Lewis a short time later and took her into custody on charges of first-degree assault, possessing a firearm while committing a felony and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. She was sent to Baylor Women’s Correctional Institute after failing to post her $70,000 bail.
