Superbike maker eyes 1,400 unit sales

British superbike maker Triumph Motorcycles plans to enter tier-II cities to ramp up its sales volume in the classic cruise bike segment, said a top official.

“We are going to open our 16th store in the country and the first one in Mangaluru on Thursday,” said Vimal Sumbly, MD, Triumph Motorcycles India. “We plan to have 24 stores in the next 2-3 years, of which 50% will be in tier 2 cities, most of which would be on a franchise basis.”

Triumph, the second-largest superbike seller in the country after Harley Davidson, has sold more than 4,500 bikes in the last four years. “The luxury bike market is pegged at 10,000 units per annum and is set to double by 2020.

We will end this fiscal (July-June) [with sales] of about 1,300 bikes” with a growth target of 10% next fiscal, Mr. Sumbly said.
