Cape Town - Wits coach Gavin Hunt says his team are still targeting a top eight finish despite a disappointing season in which the Absa Premiership champions relinquished their title.

The Students endured a horror first-half of the campaign where they were mired in the relegation places for much of that time.

It appears the Telkom Knockout victory in December was the catalyst for improved fortunes in 2018, and Wits are now in 10th position.

Yet, the outfit from Braamfontein are winless in their last five outings including an exit from the CAF Confederations Cup at the hands of Nigeria's Enyimba. 

Hunt told reporters: "I do not think it's our legs (that is the problem) but mentally, we have been through a lot. People still criticise us saying we undermine intercontinental competitions, but you cannot play in Africa. 

"It is crazy - tackles, red cards and disallowed goals. We still have nine points to play for (in the PSL). I am sure we can finish in the top eight. Anything is achievable in football."

Wits' next order of business is to take on high-flying Orlando Pirates on Tuesday.

The Sea Robbers are in second position and still have a mathematical shot of challenging for the title behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. 

The action takes place behind closed doors at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg from 19:30.
