A homicide investigation is under way after a man was found dead at a property in Whanganui. (Google Maps)

The man found dead at a Wikitoria Rd property in Whanganui on Sunday was 53-year-old local James Butler.

Police released the man's name on Tuesday afternoon, and said the homicide investigation into his death was continuing.

"Police extend our sympathies to his family and friends at this time," a spokesman said.

Emergency services were called to the property at about 6.40pm on Sunday.

Family joined police to remove the body of Butler at 7pm, following a scene examination.

Another man in his 50s, who was seriously injured, was taken to Whanganui Hospital.

On Monday it was reported the second man was in a stable condition.

An autopsy was scheduled to be carried out on Tuesday.
