Woman dies in accident, crowd goes on the rampage

Incident on GST Road disrupts traffic; SP suffers injury while clearing crowd

A woman riding pillion on a two-wheeler driven by her husband was killed on the spot when the vehicle was hit by a government bus near Mahindra City on the outskirts of the city on Saturday night.

Police sources said, P. Lavanya, 35, a resident of Peramanur near Maraimalai Nagar, was returning home from Chengalpattu with her husband Pushparaj and daughter Nishan, 3, when the accident took place. Pushparaj and the child sustained injuries.

Fearing mob fury, the bus driver allegedly abandoned the vehicle.

Irked by the delay in the arrival of an ambulance and the police, residents of the locality gathered on the Grand Southern Trunk Road, which resulted in a traffic pile-up.

When the police arrived, the residents had a heated argument with them. Some residents started pelting stones on vehicles plying on the road. To clear the crowd, the police team had to resort to mild force.

Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police Santosh Hadimani sustained minor head injuries in stone pelting.

Mr. Hadimani, however, remained at the spot, giving directions to clear the crowd.

A police team, led by Vandalur Deputy Superintendent of Police M.S.M. Valavan, took steps to take the injured to the hospital and sent the body to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital for post-mortem.

The M.M. Nagar police have registered a case and have picked up 10 people who were allegedly involved in the stone-pelting incident.
