Orange City police said they discovered the body of a homeless man Saturday night in Duck Lake near Veterans Memorial Parkway.

Police received a tip around 10 p.m. and searched the area with the help of a Volusia County Sheriff's Office helicopter. Authorities located the body near the center of the lake, said Lt. Jason Sampsell, an Orange City police spokesman.

Police identified the deceased man as 46-year-old William Edward Brown. Sampsell said he was a transient who lived in Orange City.

The lake was difficult to access on the ground so police and Orange City firefighters had to cut away several trees and branches to allow for emergency vehicles to pass through, Sampsell said.

Police said they had to use kayaks because a jon boat and trailer were too big for the makeshift path.

Sampsell said the body showed no obvious signs of trauma. A cause of death is not known.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Orange City Police Department at 386-775-5474.
