‘There is a lot more that the government can do for the community’

Radio jockey and transgender activist Priyanka R. speaks about the challenges faced by the community and the expectations from the new government.

What has the current Congress government done for the welfare of the transgender community?

To bring transgenders to the mainstream and to rehabilitate them, this government launched the “Mythri” scheme, which gives us a monthly pension of ₹500. They also passed the transgender policy that lays down measures to provide a conducive environment for the community. What is extremely heartening is that they have given space for transgenders in government advertisements. While it may look like a small gesture, it has brought visibility and acceptance. However, there is a lot more that the government can do.

Are some transgenders reluctant to be identified as one?

The reluctance is not only because of stigma from the community, but a personal choice. For instance, all my documents recognise me as a female. I want to be called a female because that is how I always want to be identified. Different people within my community have mixed views on the SC ruling that recognises transgenders as the third gender. While some welcome the move, some activists feel that it is a step behind all that we have been fighting for.

What are your expectations from the new government?

It should focus on providing us reservation in jobs so that transgenders can give up begging and come into the mainstream. The government needs to provide free sex reassignment surgeries.
