Apr 23, 2018

Birth of the as-yet-unnamed Prince of Cambridge brings out the wellwishers - and the jokers

The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to her third child with Prince William, a brother for Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Just after 1pm on Monday, Kensington Palace announced that the Duchess had been delivered of a 8lbs 7oz baby boy two hours before. He will be fifth in line to the throne.

No sooner had the news been announced than the latest royal baby became Twitter’s most talked-about subject, as congratulations poured in:

Although some were less than bowled over:

Many users noted that the new prince’s 23 April birthday was suitably patriotic, falling on both St. George’s Day and the anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth and death.

The new prince has yet to make his first public appearance, but another family found themselves at the centre of attention outside the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London, where the Duchess has given birth to all three of her children.

The unknown couple and their new baby emerged from the ward only to be greeted by a global media circus:

But Twitter took the pair to their hearts after they gamely posed for photos:

The youngest royal will be referred to as the Prince of Cambridge until his name is publicly announced - which didn’t stop royal watchers guessing:

Although some took the game less seriously than others:
