EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström has presented the outcome of negotiations for the Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan and the trade and investment agreements with Singapore to the European Council.

The European Dairy Association (EDA) said the future implementation of the bilateral agreement will be beneficial for both economies.

EDA secretary general Alexander Anton said the FTA is good for Europe, Japan and global trade.

“Especially that as we see progress towards a new Trans-Pacific Partnership without the US, it is imperative to ratify the EU-Japan FTA as soon as possible,” Anton said.

The EDA said a speedy ratification by the Council and European Parliament would be a clear statement toward the EU’s broader trade strategy and would illustrate willingness to engage in trade negotiations with other countries.

“Now, the issues come – as always – in the details,” Anton said.

“A proper implementation of the agreement will be key.  We hope for a quick announcement of an implementation date for this FTA which will bring new opportunities for our industry.”
