Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu has rejected the impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.
Mr Naidu cited lack of substantial merit in the notice given by Congress-led Opposition parties.
The Chairman put 22 reasons behind the rejection after holding extensive consultations with the top legal and constitutional experts before taking the decision.
Seven Opposition parties had last week moved the impeachment notice against the Chief Justice of India on five grounds of misbehaviour.
The Congress says it will move the Supreme Court to challenge Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu's decision rejecting the impeachment notice against the Chief Justice of India.
Talking to reporters in New Delhi, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal said that never before in India's history had a motion moved by MPs been dismissed at a preliminary stage.
BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi has said, the impeachment notice brought by the Opposition against the CJI had no merit and facts.
She said it was an attempt to create pressure on the judiciary and the Government. Briefing media in New Delhi, Ms Lekhi welcomed the Rajya Sabha Chairman's decision and accused the Congress of trying to intimidate the judiciary for political gains.
