Some prefer their steaks with a little salt and pepper, whereas others like it with a robust sauce to add dimension.
ThisWeek staffers answer the question: What are your thoughts about putting butter on steak?
Dennis Laycock: A good steak tastes and cuts like butter anyway, so it's superfluous. However, I'm not above putting ketchup on a bad steak.
Lisa Proctor: I enjoy garlic butter on steak. Mmmm…steak.
Scott Hummel: I would try it, but I think the flavors would be incompatible. I like my steak medium. I don't think that would work.
Neil Thompson: I'm all for it, though I consider myself a red-meat traditionalist. A well-prepared and expertly cooked steak should be able to stand on its own, but a sizzling compound butter can make it that much more savory.
Andrew King: A little is good to add some flavor, but sometimes I think a huge scoop of butter is used as a crutch for subpar steak.
Abby Armbruster: Why wouldn't you? It's a nice way to finish off a steak when cooking it in a pan, but I wouldn't top the steak with a pat of butter once it hits the plate.
Lee Cochran: I've brushed melted butter with seasoning on a steak before cooking, and I've pan fried steak in butter. If you're talking after cooking, no, I haven't done that.
Nate Ellis: When broiling, grilling or otherwise cooking it, feel free.
Sarah Sole: My thoughts are that I don't eat steak.
