NZR releases a timely video about diversity, attacking discrimination video

Talk about timing. Just hours after All Blacks coach Steve Hansen praised halfback TJ Perenara for speaking out in favour of diversity, New Zealand Rugby has released a diversity promotion video.

Perenara tweeted his opposition last week to Australian rugby star Israel Folau's comment on Instagram that gay people would go to Hell if they did not repent.

On Monday NZR released a two minute "diversity in strength" promotion video, which bring into play key aspects from the Folau controversy.

Israel Folau has triggered comments and action from high profile rugby players in New Zealand and abroad after his comments on homosexuality.

This video, featuring All Blacks and Black Ferns players, was filmed in Japan.

"The next battle is different. The next enemy is truly formidable and deeply devious," the voiceover on the video says.

"It is discrimination - an enemy that cannot be fought alone and must be defeated together.

"It will take more than 15 - it will take thousands, millions."

The video comes the same day All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said he was proud of Perenara, who in a series of Twitter posts offered support to anyone struggling with their sexual identity and said he was "100% against" the things suggested by Folau.

"In TJ's case I was really proud of him. What he did tweet was on the money," Hansen said

"You're a good human being, regardless of whether you're a gay person, a straight person. Quite frankly we don't care [within the All Blacks] and I don't care personally myself either.

"But I thought he tweeted well, his words were good. He gave a strong message to those young people in the circumstance where they could be fighting and worrying about their own identities and, again, I said I was proud of him and I stick by that."

Hansen and NZR have worked hard on their diversity and inclusion programme, with the All Blacks setting the standard as ambassadors.

"The All Blacks are about being respectful and it's a privilege to be part of the All Blacks, so you don't want to go spoiling that by coming across in a way that doesn't reflect that."

Last year, NZR became the first national sporting organisation to earn the Rainbow Tick for its push for diversity.

Tew spoke about the Folau controversy last week, but was cautious to place any blame. Tew said NZR were fully inclusive.
