St. Louis Free Soup Supper

The First United Methodist Church, located at 116 S. Franklin St. in St. Louis, will be offering a free soup supper for the community from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday. A variety of soups will be offered along with crackers, bread, dessert and a beverage. The west door is handicap accessible by way of an elevator.

Shepherd Smorgasbord Dinner

The Shepherd United Methodist Church will hold its family smorgasbord dinner from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The menu includes baked chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy, biscuits & gravy, baked beans, vegetable, salad, cakes, pies, and beverages.

Tumbleweed Band Plays Community Dance

Phil and Joyce Leonard have announced a community dance from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, at the St. Vincent DePaul Parish Hall located at 205 E. Maple St. Refreshments will be available. The Tumbleweed Band will play the best in traditional country western music. The Tumbleweed band includes Phil and Joyce Leonard From St. Louis (Shepherd grads), Jerry Mawhorter from Gladwin, Elmer Otto from Riverdale, and Bill Bryant from Shepherd (Shepherd grad).

CMU Library Event

CMU Libraries hosts vintage neon specialists Josh and Becky Averill from “The Bends Glassworks,” and Tom Dymora from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, April 30, in the Baber Room at CMU Park Library. They complete refurbishing of one of CMU’s most important artworks. Noah’s Neon 1, which was created in 1995 by acclaimed Detroit artist Charles McGee, who also was commissioned to create Gateway (Centennial Sculpture), which has been exhibited in the Rose Arena pond for nearly 20 years. These events are free and open to the public.

Alma Community Art Center Events

Kids Clay with Heidi Faust is at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 30, May 7, and May 21. The class consists of three sessions using hand-built clay techniques to create projects. For grades 2-5; first grade with instructor permission. Watercolor Batik with Diane Clise is at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 10. Learn this vibrant, beautiful, and easy technique to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Offered monthly on second Thursdays for ages 14 and up. Arty Parties: Call us to arrange a date, a time and a plan. We do office retreats, fun fundraisers, friend or family get-togethers, birthdays, and more for a range of ages. We’ll provide an art instructor and materials, and can host a small party at ACAC if you wish. Winn Smorgasbord Dinner

The Winn United Methodist Church, located at 8187 S. Winn Rd., is having a smorgasbord dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 3. The menu includes chicken and meatloaf, with sides, and homemade pie. An adult dinner costs $8, children cost $ 4.

‘Power of Dad’ Fund Raiser

A ‘Flying Pancake’ fund raiser for “The Power of Dad” program will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 5, at The Potter’s House located at 5346 E. Deerfield Rd. This event will help bring the program to Mt. Pleasant. Tickets are $8 at the door, or $7 prior to the event.

St. Louis VFW Buffet

The St. Louis VFW Post 3055 will again host its three-meat-complete buffet dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9. Adults cost $9, children aged 5 to 12 cost $4, and under 5 are free. Dinners are served the second Wednesday of every month.

Community Cancer Services Meeting

Community Cancer Services of Isabella County will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the “Into the Light Cancer Awareness Walk” on Friday, Sept. 21. It’s looking for lots of volunteers to help with this event. Individuals and teams wishing to help are invited to a planning meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, at Cheers in Mt. Pleasant.

MARSP Meeting

The Isabella County Retired School Personnel chapter of MARSP will meet at noon on Tuesday, May 1, at the Commission on Aging located at 2200 S. Lincoln Rd. in Mt. Pleasant. Lunch will be served first and meeting to follow. Musical Instruments Wanted

The Pine River Arts Council musical instrument sale is Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5, at First Presbyterian Church in Alma. Customers can buy and sell used musical instruments. Sellers may consign the instruments they bring in and, if consigned, the seller earns 70 percent of the purchase price. Or, instruments may be donated, in which case the arts council sets the price and keeps the proceeds. This is a joint fundraiser and part of the proceeds go to the Gratiot String Association.

‘Walk & Roll’ for Mental Health Awareness

The 20th annual “Community Walk & Roll for Mental Health Awareness” will be held Saturday, May 12. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. The walk begins at Island Park, located at 331 N. Main St. in Mt. Pleasant, and travels through the paths of our local city parks. There are many routes available for walkers and rollers, so everyone can travel at their own pace. After the Walk & Roll refreshments and door prizes are planned. People may register the day of the event or to pre-register; you can pick up forms at any MMI office throughout mid-Michigan, (see www.mmionline.com for local address), or at CMHCM, located at 301 South Crapo, Mt. Pleasant.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Alma Grad Completes Basic

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Tyler G. Boody graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Boody is the son of Misty Condon of Vestaburg, and Mark Boody of Waterford, and husband of Brittany Boody of Shepherd. He is a 2013 graduate of Alma High School.
