Lawrence Herbert "Chip" Symonds Jr. "Creativity is intelligence having fun." Albert Einstein. Lawrence Herbert "Chip" Symonds, Jr., 56, died peacefully in his sleep on April 5, 2018, at his home in Greensboro, N.C. He had been diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Chip moved with his family to Winston Salem, N.C., later moving to Greensboro following college. Chip demonstrated his love of music early, performing saxophone with Jazz ensembles while in Elementary and Junior High School. He attended the North Carolina School of the Arts High School in Winston Salem to study music composition and graduated from Reynolds High School in 1979. He studied music composition at Greensboro College and developed into a gifted multi-instrumentalist musician, singer-songwriter. Chip published his music under the Soundport label and performed in various venues around the region as "LifeTrip" for more than 27 years. Over that time, he felt honored to forge a connection to others through music performance. Chip collaborated with many musicians over the years contributing improvisational work on the saxophone, guitar, flute and keyboard. He loved his work as a historical interpreter at Old Salem Museum and Gardens in Winston Salem where his duties included performing on their collection of antique instruments, including a pianoforte, baroque flute, Romantic era guitar and the Tannenberg Organ. Recently, Chip found special joy in teaching music students at Salem Music Academy in Winston-Salem. His music is available online at CD Baby, Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Amazon, Google Play and others. A gifted athlete, Chip excelled at cross country, and in his senior year at Reynolds was recognized as NC District 8 Runner of the Year. Through his love of the outdoors, he became an advocate for environmental protection, and especially enjoyed spending time in nature. On a beautiful day he might be found relaxing in one of the many gardens and parks in the region or working in his own garden at home in the company of his adopted black & white cat Miss Beegie.
