Making its mark in the field of ‘Civil Engineering’ the Indian Institute of Technology- Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM), Dhanbad is on move to start M. Tech course form next academic session.

The civil engineering department of IIT-ISM gets the nod from the Board of Governance (BOG) to start Structural Engineering course for M Tech from next academic session, informed an official. “All necessary arrangements have been completed,” he added.

Explaining about the course official said, “Civil and Structural Engineering encompasses a range of disciplines, including road, rail, drainage systems, dams, harbours, bridges, buildings and other structures. Civil and structural designers and drafters plan, design, develop and manage construction and repair projects.”

“This course develops one's skills and knowledge in the design and drafting of engineering plans to recognised standards,” he added.

'Students will learn about different areas of civil engineering, including construction, project management, design and testing including about the design and drafting of concrete, steelwork, roads and pipes, as well as hydrology, stormwater drainage and foundations,” he said.

“Within Civil Engineering, it is largely the implementation of mechanics to the design of the large structures that are fundamental to basic living, such as buildings, bridges, walls, dams, and tunnels while in ‘Structural Engineering’ it need to design structures so that the structures do not collapse or behave in undesirable ways while serving their useful functions,” he informed.

IIT (ISM) is a public engineering and research institution located in Dhanbad has 18 academic departments covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Management programs.
