PUNE: Police on Saturday arrested a 27-year-old man for abusing and threatening to hit a constable during a special drive to check usage of seat belts and tinted car windows.
The suspect was stopped and told to pay a fine on both counts when he got aggressive. “While Akash Gagade (the suspect) was abusing constable Nikhil Kurhe, a senior officer reached there. When the officer tried to talk to him, Gagade abused him too. Following this, a complaint was lodged,” said assistant inspector (traffic) Narayan Misal.

Gagade was charged under IPC sections 352, 353, 504 and 506 and also the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act. “We have arrested Gagade and sent him to court,” inspector Shankar Khatke said.

“We were standing on Paud Road, near Kothrud traffic division, and were checking the vehicles,” Kurhe said. “Around 12.45pm, I noticed a red car drive at a high speed towards Karve Road. After noticing the tinted glasses, I asked the driver to stop,” he added.

Kurhe also saw that the driver was not wearing a seat belt. “I asked him to show me his driving licence, but he said he didn’t have it,” Kurhe said.

Kurhe then asked Gagade to pay a fine. However, the latter threatened him. “I ignored him and started walked back towards our team. I turned back when he (verbally) abused me,” Kurhe said.

“Gagade got out of the car, grabbed my collar and raised his hand to hit me,” he recalled.

“When we saw (Gagade) raise his hand to hit our constable, we ran towards them,” Misal said. “He started arguing with us. A senior officer arrived at the spot. Gagade argued with him too,” Misal added. They alerted Kothrud police and handed Gagade over to them. He was produced before the court on Sunday and is out on bail.
