Demanding a stringent law to deal with the rapists, the activists of Aam Aadami Party (AAP) staged a demonstration at Gandhi Park in Dehradun on Saturday. Carrying placards condemning the incidents like Kathua gang rape case, Surat rape case and the alleged involvement of a minister of Yogi Aditya Nath government of Uttar Pradesh in a rape case , the AAP activists expressed their anguish and pitched for a stringent  law which, they said, would act as an effective deterrent to such heinous crimes being perpetrated on the women across the country.

The demonstration held on the day was part of three-day public awareness campaign launched by AAP in Uttarakhand, highlighting the spike in  rape and other atrocities being perpetrated  on  the women in the country.

The district AAP president, Uma Sisodiya reminded that the chairperson of Delhi state commission for women, Swati Maliwal has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past ten days while demanding constitution of special fast track courts  to try rape cases. “Swati is demanding that the fast- track courts should finish hearing and pronounce death sentence to those pronounced guilty of raping minors,” Sisodiya said.

The AAP leader further said that the rapists take advantage of the lacunae existing in the law and escape unpunished. “Nothing short of capital punishment should be given to those found guilty of raping the minors,” she said, adding that the Uttarakhand Government should take a cue from the AAP Government of Delhi and pass a resolution in the state Assembly, recommending death sentence to those who rape the minors.
