Teens charged over fatal hit and run in Wantirna South

Police have charged two teenagers who allegedly fled the scene of a fatal car crash in Melbourne's outer east early Saturday morning.

It is alleged a stolen Lexus 4WD driving at "horrendous speeds" ran a red light in Wantirna South and collided with a Holden Commodore at about 1am Saturday.

The crash killed the Commodore's two occupants, newlyweds Matt Goland, 38, and Bita Zaeim, 32.

A 19-year-old Boronia man, Eric Victorsen, was charged with two counts of culpable driving and one count of theft of a motor vehicle. He appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday and was remanded in custody to reappear on Tuesday.

A 15-year-old Belgrave girl was charged with two counts of culpable driving (accessory after the fact) and one count of theft of a motor vehicle.

Friends of Mr Goland and Ms Zaeim posted tributes to social media.

"So shocked to hear about this," one man wrote on Facebook. "One of the nicest guys you could ever meet with such a bright future. RIP Matt."

A friend of Ms Zaeim, Paris Karalis, posted a tribute on Facebook.

"Rest in peace beautiful soul! Bita Zaeim. Completely and utterly shocked that you're gone! My heart goes out to you and your family."

The Lexus allegedly hit the passenger side of the car, killing Mr Goland. His wife, Ms Zaeim, who was driving, died later in hospital.

The two teenagers who were allegedly driving the car were arrested at a Belgrave home at 1.15pm Saturday, and received medical treatment under police guard.

Acting Superintendent Stuart McGregor said the car was going at "horrendous speeds" when the collision occurred.

"I have seen some pretty terrible incidents," he said.

"This is probably up there (with the worst). I have had to stand at the intersection with the parents of one of the deceased."

The Lexus 4WD the teenagers were allegedly driving was allegedly stolen from a garage in Lysterfield on Wednesday night. The investigation into this aggravated burglary is ongoing.

The 19-year-old man will face the Magistrates Court on Sunday and the 15-year-old girl will appear before the Children's Court at a later date.
