Quiros claims halfway lead in Morocco

2018-04-20 21:32

Cape Town - Spain's Alvaro Quiros will take a one stroke lead into the third round of Trophée Hassan II after carding a second round of 70, two under par, at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.

The 35-year-old, who shared the overnight lead on five under par, struggled to find his rhythm at the start of the day.

"Well, clearly the day was a completely different day in respect to yesterday, a little more windy. The early tee times are completely different, but in general, I guess the golf course is going to be playing more difficult than yesterday. So pleased to finish with the score that I have finished," said Quiros.

Birdies on the tenth, 12th and 14th holes were immediately cancelled out by bogeys on the 11th, 13th and 15th holes.

However, the Spaniard made the turn two-under par with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes.

"The truth is, the bogeys that I have made today, I 100 percent deserve it, so there's no regrets in that way. It's true, too, that I haven't holed many putts. I believe I held a couple of putts and then I make another two or three greens, I 3-putt. They are - sometimes they are playing too slow for what we are used to, and plus the wind, it's always difficult to calculate long putts," he said.

"As I said yesterday, I really believe your mind-set could change when you have two or three holes to play in a final round. Before that, there's a lot of things that could happen, so no, not going to change anything."

Quiros would remain on seven-under par after two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine, holding a one-stroke advantage over Australia's Andrew Dodt.

Dodt carded the joint best round of the day on the Red Course in Rabat.

After making the turn level par, he birdied the 11th, eagled eagled the 12th and then birdied the 14th hole to sign for a four-under par round of 68 and a six-under par total

South African Erik Van Rooyen carded a second round of 71 to move to five under par, while Austin Connelly and Bradley Dredge share fourth place on four under.

The French pair of Benjamin Hebert and Alex Levy are tied for sixth place alongside Sweden's Joakim Lagergren and England's Paul Waring on three-under par.
