Following the steps of its Silicon Valley counterparts, Facebook is looking to build its own chip to power its devices and servers.

As per a Facebook job listing posted on its website, the company is looking for a Manager who can “build and manage an end-to-end SoC/ASIC, firmware and driver development organization, including all aspects of front-end and back-end standard cell ASIC development.”

Along with that, it is also seeking ASIC & FPGA Design Engineer to "build custom solutions targeted at multiple verticals including AI/ML, compression, and video encoding.”

The job requirement suggests that Facebook’s efforts are still in early stages. However, this step would lower its dependence on chipmakers like Qualcomm and Intel.

The job opening was also tweeted by Facebook AI researcher Yann LeCun. However, the opening did not exactly clarify for what the developed chips would be employed. But the qualification it seeks in the candidates points that the chips would be used in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

As per a Bloomberg report, the company is going to launch Oculus Go next month. It is a $200 standalone virtual-reality headset that runs on a Qualcomm processor.

Recently, there has been a trend among technology giants to develop their own chips to support their hardware. Apple already ships its mobile phones with self-developed chips. Moreover, it is planning to replace Intel chips its uses in its MacBooks.

Last year, Google also bundled custom image processing chip in its Pixel phones. Similarly, it produces its own AI chips.

Reportedly, Amazon is also working on its own semiconductor chips to power Alexa devices.
