Typical Walmart worker makes $19,177 a year

The chief executive officer of Walmart Inc. makes 1,188 times the typical worker, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing late Friday. In fiscal 2018 the median worker compensation was $19,177, and CEO Douglas McMillon's total compensation was $22.8 million. Walmart excluded about 90,000 employees outside of the U.S. from countries such as Costa Rica, Guatemala, and South Africa, after which the company took into account the remaining 2.2 million workers in its employ when determining the median compensation. Firms are reporting their CEO pay in comparison to the median worker for the first time because of a 2015 rule mandated by the Dodd-Frank act. Walmart stock was flat in the extended session after closing down 1% to $86.98. Walmart stock has lost 12% this year, as the S&P 500 index has gained less than 1%.

Roku stock rises after Needham doubts impact of Amazon/Best Buy deal

Shares of Roku Inc. are up 2.1% in premarket trading after Needham analyst Laura Martin questioned whether the company would be impacted much from Amazon.com Inc.'s plans to set Fire-equipped smart TVs at Best Buy Co. Inc. . News of Amazon's collaboration with Best Buy sent Roku shares tumbling in Wednesday's session. Because Amazon's partnership with Best Buy is exclusive, "this eliminates Amazon as a competitive threat in Walmart , Costco , Target , etc, and Best Buy can still sell all other Roku TVs," wrote Needham's Martin. She also questioned the popularity of the TV brands Amazon is partnering with: "The Insignia brand has not held a top 13 TV market share in the past 10 years and the Toshiba brand fell from about 7.2% market share in 2011 to nearly zero in 2017." Martin rates Roku a buy with a $50 price target on the stock. Roku shares are down 39% so far this year, while the S&P 500 is up 1.3%.

Walmart revamps e-commerce site

Walmart Inc. unveiled a revamped e-commerce site early Tuesday that includes "relatable" photography and more local and personalized features such as online grocery and easy re-order. A new home specialty section has already launched, and a new destination for fashion that will include the Lord & Taylor store announced last year is coming soon. Lord & Taylor is part of the Hudson's Bay Co. portfolio of stores. According to Marc Lore, CEO of Walmart U.S. e-commerce, who announced the new website in a blog post, the company considered customer feedback and input from brands selling on the site during the redesign process. Brands will be able to "seamlessly" integrate their ads into the new site, he wrote. Walmart shares are up 0.5% in premarket trading, but down 12.1% for the year so far. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 0.6% for 2018 to date.

Kraft Heinz's stock falls after analyst swings from bullish to bearish

Shares of Kraft Heinz Co. fell 0.7% in morning trade Monday, after Credit Suisse swung to bearish from bullish on the processed food and beverage company, citing concerns over the company's ability to prioritize growth over margins. Analyst Robert Moskow cut his rating to underperform, after being at outperform since he started covering the company in July 2015, and slashed his stock price target to $55 from $77. He said the company's expertise in cutting costs and price realization worked well when all of its peers were forced to do the same, but the playing has become more competitive now that retailers like Walmart Inc. and Kroger Co. are demanding more to drive growth. "We harbor serious doubts about the management team's ability to generate sufficient product innovation to grow its collection of 'retro' brands in highly commoditized categories," Moskow wrote in a note to clients. The stock has been hovering just above the near 3 1/2-year closing low of $60.03 hit on March 23. It has tumbled 22.2% year to date, while the SPDR Consumer Staples Select Sector ETF has lost 7.0% and the S&P 500 is little changed.

Walmart shares are up 0.4% in premarket trading, but down 13% for the year so far. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 2.1% for the period.
