RANCHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clinched victory in the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) elections in Jharkhand, the results of which were declared on Friday.

BJP candidate Asha Lakra, who is also the sitting mayor, defeated Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s (JMM) nominee Varsha Gari by 39,000 votes. Lakra secured 1.49 lakh votes in her favour. Gari secured 1.10 lakh votes.

Ranchi went to polls on April 16 along with 33 other urban local bodies in Jharkhand. The state capital had recorded 49% voter turnout on poll day.

This was the first ULB election in Jharkhand where mayoral and deputy mayoral posts were contested under political party symbols.

“I was confident of winning. The support of BJP’s state leadership and chief minister Raghubar Das was with me. I thank the people of Ranchi for re-electing me. I will work for the people with renewed energy,” Lakra said outside the counting center as BJP supporters celebrated.

BJP’s deputy mayoral candidate Sanjeev Vijaywargia also registered victory by defeating Congress candidate Rajesh Gupta by a huge margin.
