At the Cork Screw Bar and Grille, a local American-style favorite in New Smyrna Beach, regulars know they can always count on two savory soups — Bob’s Smokin’ Chili and Crab Corn Chowder. In addition to these two, a soup of the day is offered, and it can be anything. General Manager Ross Wiley says the kitchen staff is encouraged to get creative with their soup recipes, and the proof is in the soup. Soups of the day have included Chestnut and Chantelle Mushroom and Jerk Seasoned Pork and Pineapple, evidence of the creativity bursting from the kitchen.

A tried and true favorite among locals and tourists seems to be Bob’s Smokin’ Chili, said Wiley. As a family owned restaurant, the chili is appropriately named after general manager Ross Wiley’s father, Bob.

“This chili is something we are really proud of,” said Wiley. “It’s meaty, hearty and we top it with sour cream and green onion.”

With a hint of heat and an abundance of depth and flavor, this chili could hold its own in a chili cook-off. Served with a complimenting piece of homemade jalapeno cornbread and smothered with pineapple glaze, this combo could easily be its own meal and not just a side. The jalapeno gives the cornbread a kick of spice while the pineapple glaze creates a soothing balance of savory, sweet heat.

Set back off the street and with an abundance of lush greenery, torches and palm trees adorning the entrance, the Cork Screw feels reminiscent of a tropical garden oasis where time is irrelevant and the wine glasses are never empty. Wine bottle chandeliers hang above tables and a rustic brick wall serves as a backdrop. A patio umbrella straddles a cluster of tables and an awning hangs above an interior window, creating the feel of dining in an outdoor garden, but in the comfort of air conditioning — making each bite just a little more enjoyable.
