A New Castle woman has died after a crash Wednesday evening near Newport, state police say.

Janet Hicks, 78, was admitted to Christiana Hospital in critical condition and died of her injuries Friday.

At about 7:34 p.m. Wednesday, Hicks was driving a Hyundai Elantra east on Del. 4 and turned left onto Boxwood Road, directly into the path of a Dodge Caravan driven by a 21-year-old Newark woman who had a green light, police said.

The Newark woman, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Christiana Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Hicks was also wearing a seat belt, police said.

Impairment is not being considered as a factor for either driver.
