A 66-year-old man found trapped in a Wilmington house fire Thursday afternoon has died, according to the city fire department.

The blaze broke out about 4:30 p.m. in the 2100 block of Washington Street and drew multiple units from the Wilmington Fire Department to the scene, said Battalion Chief John Looney, a spokesman with the department.

When crews arrived, they found smoke showing from the second floor of the home, he said.

Firefighters immediately stretched fire hose lines and "began an aggressive fire attack," Looney said, while simultaneously searching the home.

They found an unconscious man on the second floor and quickly removed him from the fiery house, Looney said.

He was taken to Christiana Hospital in critical condition, but died last night, Looney said. His name is being withheld pending family notification, he said.

Investigators with the Wilmington Fire Marshal's Office haven't yet determined what caused the blaze, but said the investigation remains ongoing.
